Navarrese Pyrenees
The variety of microclimates creates a unique essence in the Navarrese Pyrenees.
It is well known that different climates converge in Navarre that contribute to its variety of landscapes, and the Navarrese Pyrenees valleys are a clear example of this. The high mountains in the north-eastern part are round and flat due to the influence of the Cantabrian in the western part. This gives more extreme winters that soften as the landscape itself softens. This means we enjoy a wide range of colours, ranging from green in the valleys of Roncal, Salazar, Aezkoa and the Irati Forest, to the white of the Nordic ski slopes of Larra-Belagua and Abodi, and peaks such as the Mesa de los Tres Reyes and the Belagua Glacier Valley.
The strategic position of the Pyrenean regions has been decisive in the cultural development of the towns since, from here, you can access the section of the St James Way through Roncesvalles, of great architectural beauty. This has not meant a change in the tradition and popular culture of these peoples, as they continue to celebrate centuries-old folklore and festivals, such as the Tribute of the Three Cows, the Day of the Roncalese Clothing in Isaba, the Day of the Almadia in Burgui, the Danzantes de Ochagavía and the Volantes de Valcarlos; as well as making craft cheeses with the Roncal Denomination of Origin, preserving the rural tradition that gives them a unique personality.
Among the natural treasures of the Navarre Pyrenees are the Karst de Larra with Black Pine, deep chasms and high mountains, and the Irati Forest, one of the largest beech forests in Europe, covered by a network of trails from the Orbaitzeta Weapons Factory, and those that follow the Pyrenean Lumbier and Arbaiun gorges, with steep landscapes and sheer slopes of up to 300 m; these simply reinforce the beauty of a changing landscape, which is a paradise for many animal species like vultures, bearded vultures, otters and roe deer.
The abrupt changes in the Navarrese Pyrenees climate and landscape provide views and a privileged environment for those who visit it.
Acquaint yourself with the beauty of its ancient villages, decorated with the traditional architecture of stately houses of thick stone walls, wood and white walls, soberly decorated doors, shields, and steep roofs with round chimneys.
As streams and waterfalls flow from the mountains after spring, enjoy the tranquillity and silence of its surroundings. Experience, get to know and enjoy the great value of this genuine rural environment.
